Fortnight for Freedom:
Standing Up for Religious Freedom

Fortnight for Freedom
Tomorrow begins the second annual Fortnight for Freedom, which was initiated by the US Bishops. According to the USCCB the purpose of the Fortnight for Freedom is to promote:
[A] two-week period of prayer and action, to address many current challenges to religious liberty, including the August 1, 2013 deadline for religious organizations to comply with the HHS mandate, Supreme Court rulings that could attempt to redefine marriage in June, and religious liberty concerns in areas such as immigration and humanitarian services.
Threats to Freedom
The USCCB cites a list of threats to freedom. We are already seeing infringements take place and more are likely in the near future. In just last year and half we've seen a court rule that a Catholic diocese cannot enforce its moral criteria (not to mention the employment contract) in the hiring and firing of teachers. We've recently heard of the IRS targeting Catholic speakers and possibly Catholic institutions. The HHS mandate deadline (August 1st) for religious organizations to comply is looming.

According to Dr. Katrina Lantos Swett, the keynote speaker at the National Religous Freedom Award Dinner, the threats are real:
There is no doubt that religious freedom faces extraordinary and novel challenges that grow out of increasing and aggressive secularism, coupled with fundamental redefinitions of core social institutions. These changes are putting some religious communities on a collision course with newly emerging social concurrences on matters of morality, equality and how we define fundamental civil and human rights.

You are Charged with Being Catholic.
How do you plead?

Imagine if they were putting Catholics on trial for what they believe. This is not a too far fetched idea in some countries. Some might argue in light of the HHS mandate that we aren't that far from such a scene here in the US.

Here's a creative video that portrays that very notion, with a twist. When you finish watching the video, ask yourself "What would the judge decide in my case?"

Cardinal Dolan Sends the DNC a Message in Prayer

A few weeks ago many in the Catholic media (mostly bloggers and self-appointed experts) slammed Cardinal Timothy Dolan for inviting President Obama to the Alfred Smith charity banquet. Since then, Cardinal Dolan has given the benediction at the Republican National Convention and last night closed out the Democratic National Convention. For all those afraid that he wasn't smart enough to deal with the president, where are you now? It seems to me that Cardinal Dolan, despite being ignored by the major networks, had a bit to say to the Democrats and President Obama in his closing prayer.

Watch for yourself:

Fortnight For Freedom

Today marks the beginning of the USCCB's Fortnight for Freedom, two weeks dedicated to prayer and reflection on religious freedom. The US Bishops have chosen this fourteen day period to begin with the feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More and to culminate on Independence Day. According to the bishops this time is meant to be a "special period of prayer, study, catechesis, and public action [that] will emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty."

The USCCB has organized a wealth of information to arm the laity with the resources to pray, study and act. This includes articles on the subject of religious freedom, daily reflections, text message updates, prayer cards, Church bulletin inserts and much more.

Here is the Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty:

O God our Creator,

Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit,
you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world,
bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel
to every corner of society.

We ask you to bless us
in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty.
Give us the strength of mind and heart
to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened;
give us courage in making our voices heard
on behalf of the rights of your Church
and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.

Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father,
a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters
gathered in your Church
in this decisive hour in the history of our nation,
so that, with every trial withstood
and every danger overcome—
for the sake of our children, our grandchildren,
and all who come after us—
this great land will always be "one nation, under God,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

True Freedom

Today, Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan's book True Freedom: On Protecting Human Dignity and Religious Liberty is available to download at Amazon for 99¢. This short book (only 37 pages long) is an important resource in helping one learn the Church's teaching on freedom. This particularly important as the Church in the United States faces the recent attack on religious freedom.

Most of us learned when we were very young that this country was founded on a principle of religious freedom. Did anyone ever teach us what that really meant? What does this mean today, when we live under the "dictatorship of relativism"?

This is a great way to start your summer reading program. Even if you don't have a Kindle, you can read the book on your computer through Amazon or on the Kindle app available on all Apple iProducts and Android phones.

For a more comprehensive review of the book go to Brandon Vogt's review.

STOP HHS!

I have been surprised (I don't why I should, but I have been) by the number of people that do not know about the Obama administration's HHS mandate that would force Catholics to violate their own consciences in supporting abortifacients, contraceptives, and sterilizations.

We must send a message to Congress that we will not sit idly by as our religious rights are violated. All that is needed for evil to prevail is for good men and women to do nothing.

The Fight is On!
Rise Up Oh Men of God!

Yesterday I wrote that we are in a spiritual battle against the forces of evil. The Obama-care mandate to fund contraception is a vivid example of this war.

It's clear that the Obama administration is dedicated to "treating pregnancy as a disease" and attacking the Catholic Church. It's most recent attempt at undermining the Catholic Church, is an HHS policy which would require all employers, including Catholic schools, hospitals and other Catholic charities to pay for contraception, sterilization and even some abortion producing drugs.

It's time to take a stand. First, we need to get informed and then we need to speak out directly to our legislative representatives and also spread the word via every possible venue and media.

Below you will find links to the USCCB page dedicated to responding to this issue. Additionally, you will find a copy of an OpEd written by Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan and a video from Dolan charging all Catholics to take action.

If you click on the icon on the left side of this blog that shows the Jerusalem Cross with the Stand With the US Bishops, you will be taken to a Facebook page addressing these issues. I intend to include as many links to other material via my Twitter feed: @dgonz15
